Weekly Post #1

Did You Know? 3.0
I could not help but to think that we must be getting close to end times as stated in the Bible. The global flow of information, and explosion of it, was written about over three thousand years ago.
It also seems to me that the USA better get away from its dumbed down, Union dominated school curriculum, and get with the program! During the Industrial Revolution, we were the Gold Standard. Sadly, that does not seem to be case anymore.
Mr. Winkle Wakes
Mr. Winkle must of been amazed at the all the new inventions! The more technology advances, the faster it improves. I remember when computers did not have hard drives...you hat to input your program, then run it. If you shut it off, the program was gone! Any one remember "bag phones"?
One hundred years from now, the world will not be recognizable to any of us!
Sir Ken Robinson: The Importance of Creativity
WOW! Ken is SO on target, it is scary! This is the sole reason I am joining the education field. I truly believe schools today "teach the test" in order not to lose federal funding. How is this beneficial to the children? To society?
My eight year old son, Caleb, has consistently tested in the top 98 percentile...and every year his teachers want us to have him tested for ADHD! Incredible! (We refuse, of course.) We encourage his creativity and enrolled him in a private school that DOES NOT stifle it.
Vicki Davis: Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts
This is so how I feel. Teachers should not be telling students what to think, but rather "coaching" ( to borrow Dr. Stranges' term) young developing minds how to think.
If the education establishment in this country was serious about "teaching", they would all be in this camp, and the USA would once again be the Gold Standard!

  1. Barry,

I have to say that out of all the responses I have read so far, I enjoyed yours the most. They were concise, but you managed to personalize them by relating what you heard in the videos with your own life. This style of summary and reaction report is great to read because it is not the same as any of your peers simply because none of your peers have the same experiences as you (i.e. your son Caleb, your motivation for teaching, your knowledge of the Word).

    Great work Mr. Bartman,

    Anthony

  2. I agree with Barry when he stated that it’s getting close to end of the world. In his response to did you know? Barry you are right Mr. Winkle was shocked and amazed to see the new invention in world. In fact he was total confuse at one point he had to leave. Yes, I could remember the time when I wrote a paper and did not save it to the computer before it crash my work was lost. Barry you should encourage your child to use his own creativity if the teacher would not. Learning is part of a student’s daily life and will always be used in all aspects. Education is a conceptual framework it embody certain values and process. It’s up to the parents to keep their children creativity up. Barry you are right teacher should not be telling children what to think. They should be coaching them and preparing them for higher education. Everyone learns differently at different pace. It’s a good thing to introduce students to a different form of technology by connecting them with the world from the classroom.

  3. I definitely agree with you when you say that schools "teach the test" these days. Although funding is important to be able to teach and have the resources that you need, all of the class time doesn't need to be dedicated to memorizing standardized tests or even multiple choice tests that the teacher makes up.
It is very good that your passion is in the right place for this field. And regarding the "Did you know?" post, we may very well be closing in on the end times, but it is with our own hands that this happens.

    Great post Barry!

  4. Barry,

You bring up a great point about the way teachers need to help guide students and let students help them as well. This class is a perfect example! Dr. Strange and I have learned more from students such as Anthony and Jamie Lynn then we could have learned on our own. We have a community of learners working right now and you and your fellow students are adding to this great community.
